ACTIVITY 2: PIECES OF THE PUZZLE

1. Divide the class into 3 groups and assign each group one of the timeline events.

2. Have students research each of these, answering the following questions:

Who were the key players in the event?

What was the political/social/economic context in which this event took place?

How does the work of John Lewis and/or Jewell Jones relate to this event?
-
How did the event/legislation help or hinder progress on this issue area?

What was the aftermath of this event?

3. Have students present their findings to the rest of the class and then moderate a discussion about how this issue area has evolved over time. Use the following questions as a guide:

How do these events fit together?

Did one event affect or lay the groundwork for another?

Are there any common threads or themes that are present in each of these events/pieces of legislation?

How has this issue area evolved over time?
-
Moving forward, what do you believe needs to happen to create change surrounding this issue area?
