ACTIVITY 2: PIECES OF THE PUZZLE

​

1. Divide the class into 3 groups and assign each group one of the timeline events.

​

2. Have students research each of these, answering the following questions:

  • Who were the key players in the event?

  • What was the political/social/economic context in which this event took place?

  • How does the work of John Lewis and/or Jewell Jones relate to this event?

  • How did the event/legislation help or hinder progress on this issue area?

  • What was the aftermath of this event?

3. Have students present their findings to the rest of the class and then moderate a discussion about how this issue area has evolved over time. Use the following questions as a guide:

  • How do these events fit together?

  • Did one event affect or lay the groundwork for another?

  • Are there any common threads or themes that are present in each of these events/pieces of legislation?

  • How has this issue area evolved over time?

  • Moving forward, what do you believe needs to happen to create change surrounding this issue area?
