ACTIVITY 2: PIECES OF THE PUZZLE​

  1. Have students explore Geography of Poverty to increase their understanding of the issue area.

  2. Divide the class into 3 groups and assign each group one of the timeline events.

  3. Have students research each of these events, answering the following questions:

    • Who were the key players in the event?

    • What was the political/social/economic context in which this event took place?

    • How does the work of Edelman relate to this event? How does the work of Ash-Lee and Allyn relate to this event?

    • How did this event/legislation help or hinder progress in this issue area? What was the aftermath of this issue area?  

  4. Have students present their findings to the rest of the class and then moderate a discussion about how these events fit together in order to create a narrative surrounding this issue area. Use the following questions as a guide:

    • How do these events fit together?

    • Did one event affect or the lay the groundwork for another?

    • Are there any common threads or themes that are present in each of these events/pieces of legislation?

    • How has this issue area evolved over time?

    • What do you believe are some of the causes of rural poverty? How do they differ from those of urban poverty?

    • Moving forward, what do you believe needs to happen in order to create change surrounding the issue area?
