ACTIVITY 1: UNDERSTANDING THE DEFENDER​

  1. Have students review the primary source materials and answer the following questions. Some questions may require additional research.

    • Identify three compelling aspects of Marian Wright Edelman’s, Ash-Lee’s and Allyn's life.

    • Who were some of the people who influenced Edelman? Who are some of the people who influenced/influence Ash-Lee and Allyn?

    • How did Edelman’s journey from childhood to leader inspire her community and the movement surrounding her cause? How has Ash-Lee and Allyn’s journey inspired his/her community and the movement surrounding her cause?

    • What was the primary cause Edelman sought to address? What is the primary cause Ash-Lee and Allyn seek to address?

      • What were some of the specific issues?

      • What was his/her desired outcomes?

      • What tactics were used to seek resolution?

  2. What was the political/social context in which Edelman worked? What is the political/social context in which Ash-Lee and Allyn work?  Think locally and nationally, if applicable.
